You Are the Evidence

We all like to look for the ‘signs’ for direction in life. But in this case, it’s you who is the sign people have been waiting for!

Elijah lived at a time when the entire nation of Israel had turned their hearts away from God. They followed what was ‘pop-culture’ at the time and began worshipping other ‘gods’. This practice ultimately began to not only destroy the peace in their hearts, but also led them to literally cutting and injuring themselves as they practiced their religious rituals.

But despite their total rejection of Him, God still loved them, and as the evidence of His pursuit, He sent Elijah into their midst to disrupt their worlds with the love of God. This can be seen through the prayer that Elijah prayed:

“Answer me, O Lord, answer me, that this people may know that you, O Lord, are God, and that you have turned their hearts back.”

Elijah knew that God had already been working behind the scenes in the hearts of the people. God was right in the midst of the process of ‘turning their hearts back’, and now Elijah was the evidence that God had already been working in their lives. When Elijah prayed for them, the power of God turned up:

‘Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt offering and the wood and the stones and the dust, and licked up the water that was in the trench’ – 1 Kings 18:37-38 (ESV)

Just like Elijah, you are the evidence that God has already been working in the hearts of those around you. Your very presence is a physical manifestation of the love of God – personalised through you! Although they may not see it or perceive it right away, you can take courage and continue to reach out in love, knowing that God is already at work.

And just as God was only too happy to confirm His love for the people through Elijah’s prayer for fire, so too is God leaning in to powerfully answer the prayers that you pray for the people in your world.

Rather than waiting for a sign, understand that you are the sign that people have been praying for!
