One day I went to pick up my kids from Day Care and was shocked to find that I wasn’t allowed to enter into the room. I was blocked from accessing my own children!
In that moment, I had to make a choice. Either I would become angry and offended, or I would honour the person in charge and submit to the proper process.
Looking back, I am glad that I didn’t throw a tantrum! The process was in place to protect my children, and once it was confirmed I was the parent, I could enter and collect my kids!
Unfortunately, we are too often easily offended. The problem is that if we give in to offence, we actually create fences that block us from accessing the very things we desire.
Jesus encountered a woman from Syria who fell at His feet and begged for Him to heal her demon possessed daughter. But Jesus’ time had not yet come to minister to those outside of the Jewish family. The time for that would come after the resurrection.
‘Jesus told her, “First I should feed the children – my own family, the Jews. It isn’t right to take food from the children and throw it to the dogs.” – Mark 7:27
This woman could have become offended by Jesus and storm out of the building. But instead, she chose to honour him:
“That’s true, Lord, but even the dogs under the table are allowed to eat the scraps from the children’s plates.” (7:28)
Jesus was amazed and drawn to her humility. Compelled to step outside the lines, Jesus responded with compassion and said, “Now go home, for the demon has left your daughter.” (7:29-30)
When she arrived home, she found her little girl lying quietly in bed, and the demon was gone!
Rather than becoming offended and building a fence around her life, this woman chose to honour Jesus. As a result, the gate was opened for her to access the power of God that set her daughter free.
If you want to live a small life, become someone that is easily offended. Build fences around your life and live trapped in your own zoo.
But if you want a life that gives you access to the hidden rewards that live below the surface, give honour to people no matter their position in life. You will be amazed at the doors that will open for you!
