Have A Go Or You’ll Never Know

The fear of failure has been one of the greatest dream killers in history.

But when you’ve got nothing to lose and your back is up against the wall, you may just be willing to have a go like Jonathan and his armour bearer did.

With the nation’s back again the wall, Jonathan decided to have a go. He took his armour bearer with him and decided to see if he could do the impossible and take out the Philistines who threatened to destroy them:

“Let’s go across to the outpost of those pagans,” Jonathan said to his armor bearer. “Perhaps the Lord will help us, for nothing can hinder the Lord. He can win a battle whether he has many warriors or only a few!” – 1 Samuel 14:6 (NLT)

Although it seemed like a crazy idea, his armour bearer agreed to go with him. (I think this guy is the un-sung hero of the story!). Encouraged by his friend’s enthusiasm, Jonathan then came up with a complex strategy:

“If they say to us, ‘Stay where you are or we’ll kill you,’ then we will stop and not go up to them. But if they say, ‘Come on up and fight,’ then we will go up. That will be the Lord’s sign that he will help us defeat them.” (14:9-10)

God gave Jonathan the green light through their response:

‘The men shouted to Jonathan, “Come on up here, and we’ll teach you a lesson!” (14:11)

Full of faith, they began to climb up the cliff to come face to face with their enemy:

“Come on, climb right behind me,” Jonathan said to his armour bearer, “for the Lord will help us defeat them!” (14:12)

With their trust in God, Jonathan and his armour bearer ended up killing 20 men, sending panic into the entire army. At that moment God sent an earthquake which further added to the terror and confusion and saw the enemy defeated. Jonathan’s one courageous act released the power of of God to do what was otherwise impossible.

Just like Jonathan, God has also today looking for people who are willing to put it all on the line and have a go. But rather than waiting till your back is up against the wall, have a go today and take courageous steps of faith that will see the the power of God released and the impossible achieved!
