Duck For Cover

When the clouds suddenly break and the rain begins to pour, you duck for the nearest cover.

When you buy a new car or are facing uncertain times ahead, you call the insurance company to take out some cover.

When the cool of the night sets in and you need some warmth, you pull up the covers.

Being ‘under cover’ is a place of warmth, security and safety – a place you can thrive and a foundation from which you can launch from.

But the opposite happens when we come out from underneath the cover: we get exposed to the elements and lose our place of safety and security.

The Israelites had taken themselves out from underneath the covering that God provided by rejecting His ways and worshipping idols, and as a result were left vulnerable and exposed to attack from their enemies.

But then God sent Samuel the prophet to encourage them to ‘duck for cover’:

“If you want to return to the Lord with all your hearts, get rid of your foreign gods and your images of Ashtoreth. Turn your hearts to the Lord and obey him alone; then he will rescue you from the Philistines.”

1 Samuel 7:3 (NLT)

Samuel was calling the Israelites back to the protection and security only God could provide by ‘getting rid’ of their idols and ‘obeying the Lord alone’.

Thankfully, the Israelites listened to Samuels words, and ‘got rid of their images… and worshiped only the Lord’, and a result of coming under cover, the nation was miraculously delivered from their enemy:

“… the Philistines arrived to attack Israel. But the Lord spoke with a mighty voice of thunder from heaven that day, and the Philistines were thrown into such confusion that the Israelites defeated them.” (7:10).

In a similar way, God desires that we would also ‘duck for cover’:

‘Submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you’ – James 4:7 (KJV)

If you want to see miracles, access to the greatest insurance provider and find a solid foundation you can launch from, then ‘duck for cover’ by getting rid of your idols and submitting every part of your life to a God who loves you, wants to fight for you and provide for your every need!
